The graduate in Holocaust and Genocide Studies is prepared to support curriculum development in the social studies and history and to pursue careers in social and governmental service. The major also prepares students for graduate studies in history, as well as Holocaust and genocide studies, and for other postgraduate work, such as law.

The program in Holocaust and Genocide Studies is rooted in the conviction that the Holocaust was a cataclysmic episode in the course of Western history impacting culture, society, politics, ethics, science, and religion, and that there is no discipline in the academy un-touched by its shadow. In a world still tormented by mass murder and genocide, the program also rests on the moral imperative that learning from both the past and present may serve as a basis of hope for the future. The program combines historical background with an interdisciplinary exploration of both the Holocaust and other genocidal events through film, literature, philosophy, psychology, sociology, religious studies, women’s studies, and other offerings. With an understanding of such issues as prejudice, discrimination, and racism, students are equipped to analyze contemporary political situations, think critically about ethical responsibility, and respond actively to injustice.

Students selecting a Holocaust and Genocide Studies major are required to complete 36 credit hours in the field, 12 of which (e.g., three courses) are specified below. Of the remaining six course electives (24 credits), one must be a Holocaust elective (4 credits) and one must be a genocide elective (4 credits), as designated by course title (see below). Three of the six electives (12 credits) must be at the 300 level or higher. (Retrieved from the Program’s website)

Description: Online program: Genocides – violent crimes committed against national, racial, ethnic, or religious groups with the intent of entirely destroying them – have occurred throughout human history. Why? And is there a way to break the pattern?

Seton Hill’s online program in Genocide and Holocaust Studies assists current and future teachers, historians and scholars to understand the cultural, political, economic and religious forces behind genocide by engaging in comparative study of genocides of the past and present and by examining the singularly horrific crime of the Holocaust.

This certificate program provides educators with the tools that are needed to present information on the Holocaust and other forms of genocide to students in an age-appropriate and emotionally supportive manner. It also helps anyone interested in genocide and the Holocaust to have a fuller understanding of the political, social and religious issues that give rise to acts of genocide, and how the lessons of history inform possible responses to the genocides that exist in the world today. Undergraduate Minor in Holocaust Studies (University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont)

Description: A minor in Holocaust Studies can be pursued in conjunction with any major. The study of the Holocaust offers more than an opportunity to acquire knowledge about a singular historical event. It provides students with an opportunity to examine a range of broader issues, such as antisemitism, racism, xenophobia, militarism, homophobia, and the formation and functioning of stereotypes. It provides important insight into behaviors such as obedience to authority, conformity, altruism, and civil courage. A consideration of the bureaucratic methods employed by the Nazi regime to systematically identify, isolate, and eliminate large populations addresses questions about the potential for the abuse of power by governments. The responses of Jews, Jewish institutions, and others subjected to Nazi policies have implications for our understanding of how individuals and groups respond to persecution. Finally, the ways in which the Holocaust is remembered and memorialized in different national and cultural contexts serves as a useful case study of how collective memories of important historical events emerge and evolve over time.

Students considering the undergraduate minor in Holocaust Studies should contact the Director of the Center for Holocaust Studies, who can advise them about requirements, future courses, and special educational opportunities. Once students have declared the minor, the Director will continue to advise them with respect to the minor field, working in cooperation with students’ faculty advisors in their major departments.
